She’s the One Who Gets in Fights
Series: The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters Book 3
by S.R. Cronin

Genre: Historical Fantasy

BLURB:

Do you know what your problem is?

Sulphur knows hers. This 13th-century woman has trained as a fighter all her life in hopes of joining the army. Then, within days, both of her older sisters announce plans and suddenly Sulphur is expected to find a man to marry instead.

Is it her good fortune her homeland is gripped by fear of a pending invasion and the army now goes door to door encouraging recruits? Sulphur thinks it is. But once she’s forced to kill in a small skirmish, she’s ready to rethink her career decision. Too bad it’s too late. The invasion is coming, and Ilari needs every good soldier it has.

Once Sulphur learns Ilari’s army has made the strategic decision to not defend certain parts of the realm, including the one where her family lives, she has to re-evaluate her loyalty. Is it with the military she’s always admired? Or is it with her sisters, who are hatching a plan to defend their homeland with magic?

The problem with being a woman who fights for what’s right is that now, she has to figure out what is.

(The War Stories of the Seven Troublesome Sisters consists of seven short companion novels. Each tells the personal story and perspective of one of seven radically different sisters in the 1200s as they prepare for an invasion of their realm. While these historical fantasy/alternate history books can be enjoyed as stand-alone novels, together they tell the full story of how Ilari survived.)

(contains violence)

We smelled smoke as we rode, and as we got closer we could see twenty or thirty men feasting at tables. Terrified townspeople waited on them. It was easy to understand why.

Ten or so villagers were tied together in a circle around a pole surrounded by kindling. Two burly men with flushed faces stood at either side, each holding impressive flaming torches. Ropes wove through the clothes and hair of the hostages, binding them into an inseparable ring. The few children in the group cried, and an older woman tried to calm the youngest child.

The men who feasted turned toward us as we rode in.

“Ah, the famed Svadlu finally arrive. These poor villagers have been waiting for you all day,” one man laughed. “What a shame. We were nearly done with them, too. Now we have to stop our fun and fight you.”

“Madam,” a villager shouted to Tamara. “I’m the mayor.” He pointed to the unfortunate people tied together around the pole. “That’s my family.”

I heard Tamara mutter an extremely vulgar word.

“Or maybe we don’t have to fight you,” the man enjoying the feast said. “Perhaps, you’d like to wait on us instead.” He slapped his knee, delighted with this new plan. “Get me some ale,” he ordered Tamara as she sat on her horse. She didn’t move.

“Now,” he said. He motioned to one of the sweat-covered torch holders, who lowered his crackling flames closer to the kindling.

As the fire got dangerously close to the twigs, Tamara jumped off her horse, and I jumped with her. I knew from the tautness in her body that she was about to fight, and from the direction of her leap that she’d attack the man who spoke to her.

She lunged towards him with her knife drawn and I lunged towards the closest man holding a torch. I’m told I put my sword through his heart in a single motion as I leapt. I don’t remember it. I only remember reaching to seize his torch before it hit the ground, then noticing another had grabbed it for me and was dowsing it with water.
